DAY OF THE DEAD JOURNEY
ITINERARY: DAY OF THE DEAD TOUR / MAYAN CULTURE AND THE SOUL OF MEXICO
Day 1: Arrival in Mexico City
Welcome to Mexico, a country where ancient history, living traditions, and modern life coexist in a fascinating way. Upon arrival at Mexico City International Airport, you will be greeted and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you will have free time to begin discovering the Mexican capital, considered one of the largest and most captivating cities in the world. Its plazas, markets, cafés, and historic buildings offer a first glimpse into the rich cultural heritage that will accompany us throughout this journey.
Day 2: Mexico City and Frida Kahlo’s Blue House
We will begin our adventure exploring some of the most iconic landmarks of Mexico City. We will stroll through its historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where monuments tell the story of centuries of history and cultural transformation. Later, we will head to the charming neighborhood of Coyoacán, renowned for its cobblestone streets, leafy squares, and bohemian atmosphere. There, we will visit the famous Blue House, the home of Frida Kahlo. Through its rooms, personal belongings, and artworks, we will discover the extraordinary life of a woman who became one of Mexico’s greatest cultural icons. The afternoon will be perfect for enjoying the local atmosphere, tasting traditional Mexican cuisine, or simply wandering through the colorful streets of this historic district.





Day 3: Teotihuacan and Puebla
In the morning, we will travel to Teotihuacán, known as the City of the Gods. This impressive archaeological complex was once one of the most important cities of the ancient world and still preserves a unique energy that captivates every visitor.
We will walk along the Avenue of the Dead while admiring the majestic Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. We will learn about the history and mysteries of a civilization whose origins continue to inspire countless questions and fascination.
Afterwards, we will continue to Puebla, considered one of the most beautiful colonial cities in Mexico. Its colorful streets, baroque churches, and façades decorated with traditional tiles will transport us back to another era.


Day 4: Puebla, Cholula
After breakfast, we will explore the charming city of Puebla, considered one of Mexico’s colonial jewels. Its historic center, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, captivates visitors with elegant squares, magnificent baroque churches, and buildings adorned with colorful Talavera tiles that have become a symbol of the city. During our visit, we will discover the cultural and culinary richness that has earned Puebla international recognition as the birthplace of some of Mexico’s most iconic dishes.
We will then continue to Cholula, one of the most fascinating, historic, and spiritual places in the country. This ancient city was one of the most important ceremonial centers in Mesoamerica and is home to the largest pyramid in the world by volume. Although much of this monumental structure remains hidden beneath a vegetation-covered hill, beneath our feet lies an extraordinary construction built over centuries by different pre-Hispanic civilizations.
We will climb to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies, built by the Spanish on top of the ancient pyramid as a symbol of the meeting of two cultures. From this privileged viewpoint, we will enjoy breathtaking views over the Puebla Valley and, weather permitting, admire the majestic volcanoes Popocatépetl, Iztaccíhuatl, and La Malinche, whose silhouettes dominate the horizon.
Cholula is a unique place where indigenous heritage and Spanish colonial legacy come together. Its peaceful streets, lively squares, traditional markets, and numerous churches tell a story of centuries of cultural blending, spirituality, and rich traditions that remain alive to this day.





Day 5: Puebla, Oaxaca
After our visit to Puebla and Cholula, we will embark on one of the most spectacular and scenic routes of the entire journey. Leaving behind the fertile valleys guarded by the imposing volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, we will venture into the mountainous landscapes of southern Mexico, a region where nature, history, and tradition blend in an extraordinary way.
As we travel onward, the scenery transforms constantly before our eyes. Vast agricultural fields gradually give way to forest-covered mountains, deep canyons, traditional villages, and natural viewpoints offering unforgettable panoramas. The winding road crosses the mountain ranges, revealing hidden corners rarely visited by conventional tourism and allowing us to discover one of the most authentic regions of the country.
Throughout the journey, our guide will share stories and legends about the ancient civilizations that once inhabited these lands, as well as the indigenous communities that continue to preserve their languages, customs, markets, and ancestral traditions. By late afternoon, we will arrive in Oaxaca, considered by many to be the cultural heart of the country. Its bohemian atmosphere, elegant colonial streets, vibrant markets, and one of the finest gastronomic traditions in Latin America will provide us with a warm welcome. Arriving at sunset is particularly magical, as the plazas begin to fill with life, music echoes through the streets, and the aromas of traditional cuisine drift through the city, creating an experience that for many travelers becomes one of the most unforgettable memories of the entire journey.




Day 6: Hierve el Agua, Mitla and Teotitlán del Valle
Today we will explore some of the most remarkable and iconic landscapes of Oaxaca State, a region where nature, history, and ancestral traditions come together in an extraordinary way.
Our first stop will be Hierve el Agua, one of Mexico’s most spectacular natural wonders. This unique phenomenon, formed by petrified waterfalls created over thousands of years through mineral deposits, appears as if time itself has stood still. From its breathtaking viewpoints, we will enjoy panoramic views of mountains, valleys, and striking rock formations that create an unforgettable landscape.
We will then continue to Mitla, one of the most important ceremonial centers of the Zapotec civilization and a place of profound spiritual significance. Unlike many other archaeological sites in Mexico, Mitla is renowned for its extraordinary geometric stone mosaics, considered unique in Mesoamerica. After our visit, we will continue our journey toward Tehuantepec, crossing some of the most authentic and least explored landscapes of southern Mexico. Along the way, we will witness the gradual transformation of the scenery, from the mountains and valleys of Oaxaca to the vast plains of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, a region renowned for its cultural richness, indigenous traditions, and historic role as a natural bridge between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.

Day 8: Sumidero Canyon and San Cristóbal de las Casas
Today we will venture into the fascinating state of Chiapas, a land of lush nature, deep-rooted indigenous traditions, and some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Mexico.
Our first major experience of the day will be a boat journey through the majestic Sumidero Canyon, one of the country’s most spectacular natural wonders. Aboard a motorboat, we will navigate this impressive gorge carved over millions of years by the waters of the Grijalva River. Its towering vertical walls, rising more than a thousand meters in some sections, create a landscape of extraordinary beauty. Along the way, we will have the opportunity to observe the region’s rich biodiversity, including tropical birds, monkeys, crocodiles, and the lush vegetation that blankets the canyon’s slopes.
After this unforgettable experience, we will continue to San Cristóbal de las Casas, considered one of Mexico’s most beautiful and authentic cities. Day 9: San Juan Chamula and Indigenous Communities
Today’s journey will take us to the cultural and spiritual heart of Chiapas, where we will have the opportunity to experience some of the most authentic and best-preserved indigenous traditions in Mexico.
We will begin with a visit to San Juan Chamula, a Tzotzil community that has successfully preserved much of its ancestral identity, language, customs, and worldview. This remarkable village is renowned for its extraordinary church, one of the most fascinating places in the country. Inside, Catholic saints coexist with rituals of Maya origin, creating a unique atmosphere where two spiritual worlds blend in a truly remarkable way. The scent of copal incense, candles covering the pine-needle floor, and traditional ceremonies make this a deeply moving experience that is difficult to describe in words.
Throughout the day, we will continue exploring indigenous communities in the Chiapas Highlands, where ancient traditions remain an integral part of everyday life. Day 10: Day of the Dead in Romerillo
Today we will experience one of the most special, authentic, and moving moments of the entire journey. We will travel to the community of Romerillo to take part in the Day of the Dead celebrations, one of the deepest and most meaningful traditions of Mexican culture.
Far from the more commercial and tourist-oriented settings, we will have the opportunity to witness this celebration as it is truly lived by local communities, preserving customs that have been passed down from generation to generation. Throughout the day, we will discover how families prepare to symbolically welcome their loved ones back, decorating altars, sharing traditional foods, and keeping alive the memory of those who have passed away.
As evening falls and night approaches, the cemeteries are transformed into places filled with light, color, and emotion. Thousands of candles illuminate the graves while marigold flowers line the pathways with their vibrant golden hues. The scent of incense, the music, the prayers, and the conversations among family members create a deeply moving atmosphere where remembrance becomes celebration and absence is transformed into presence.

Day 11: Agua Azul, Misol-Há and Palenque
Today’s journey will take us deep into the heart of the lush Chiapas rainforest, a region of extraordinary natural beauty where water, vegetation, and biodiversity combine to create some of the most spectacular landscapes in Mexico.
Our first stop will be the famous Agua Azul Waterfalls, one of the country’s most iconic natural treasures. Here, we will admire crystal-clear waters in striking shades of turquoise cascading over limestone terraces, forming a series of waterfalls, rapids, and natural pools surrounded by abundant tropical vegetation. Day 12: Palenque and Campeche
This morning will be dedicated to exploring Palenque, considered one of the most extraordinary archaeological treasures of the Maya civilization and one of the most impressive archaeological sites in all of Mesoamerica. Surrounded by the lush tropical rainforest of Chiapas, this ancient city captivates visitors not only with the elegance and harmony of its temples, but also with the richness of its sculptures, inscriptions, and astronomical knowledge.
As we walk along its jungle paths, we will discover the story of the legendary King Pakal, one of the most important rulers of the Maya world, whose tomb was discovered within the majestic Temple of the Inscriptions. We will visit some of the site’s most iconic structures, including the Palace, the Temple of the Inscriptions, and the temples of the Cross Group, admiring the extraordinary artistic and architectural legacy of this fascinating civilization.

Located on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this charming walled city welcomes visitors with its colorful façades, peaceful plazas, and streets rich in history. As we stroll through its historic center, we will discover the legacy of a city that spent centuries defending itself against pirate and corsair attacks, preserving to this day much of its walls, bastions, and historic fortifications.





Day 13: Campeche, Uxmal and Mérida
We will begin the day exploring the charming streets of Campeche, one of the best-preserved colonial cities in the Americas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its colorful façades, peaceful plazas, and ancient fortifications transport us back to a time when the city defended itself against the pirates and corsairs who sailed the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
We will then continue to Uxmal, considered one of the masterpieces of Maya civilization and one of the most elegant and impressive archaeological sites in all of Mesoamerica. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this ancient city is renowned for the perfection of its proportions, the harmony of its architecture, and the remarkable state of preservation of its monuments. Unlike many other great Maya cities hidden deep within the jungle, Uxmal rises among gentle hills and the distinctive landscapes of the Yucatán Peninsula, creating a serene and majestic atmosphere that captivates visitors from the very first moment.
As we explore its extraordinary structures, we will discover the story of a city that reached its peak between the 7th and 10th centuries, becoming one of the most important political, scientific, and religious centers of the Maya world. We will admire the iconic Pyramid of the Magician, unique for its oval shape and the many legends surrounding it. According to local tradition, it was built in a single night by a mysterious dwarf endowed with supernatural powers.
We will continue to the magnificent Nunnery Quadrangle, considered a true architectural masterpiece. Day 14: Chichén Itzá and Playa del Carmen
Today’s journey is dedicated to discovering one of the most extraordinary archaeological treasures on Earth: Chichén Itzá, one of Mexico’s most iconic sites and recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World. This majestic ceremonial center was for centuries one of the principal political, religious, and scientific hubs of the Maya civilization, and it remains one of the most fascinating and visited destinations in the Americas.
During our visit, we will explore the impressive Pyramid of Kukulkán, also known as El Castillo, the unmistakable symbol of Chichén Itzá and one of the masterpieces of pre-Hispanic architecture. This extraordinary structure reflects the advanced astronomical, mathematical, and calendrical knowledge of the Maya. Every element was designed with remarkable precision and is closely linked to solar cycles, the equinoxes, and the sacred calendar of this ancient civilization.

Day 15: Playa del Carmen
After days filled with cultural discoveries, colonial cities, impressive archaeological sites, and extraordinary natural landscapes, we will enjoy a free day in Playa del Carmen, one of the most iconic destinations of the Riviera Maya.
This will be the perfect opportunity to relax on its beautiful white-sand beaches washed by the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, soak up the tropical sunshine, or enjoy a refreshing swim in a truly paradise-like setting. Those who wish may explore one of the region’s spectacular cenotes, natural treasures unique to the Yucatán Peninsula, take part in water activities, or simply embrace the relaxed atmosphere that defines this corner of the Mexican Caribbean.
There will also be time to stroll along the lively Fifth Avenue, the heart of Playa del Carmen, where restaurants, cafés, boutiques, and small art galleries create a vibrant atmosphere both during the day and after sunset.

Day 16: Departure
The time has come to say goodbye to Mexico. At the scheduled time, we will transfer to the airport for our return flight.
