Day 6-7-8-9-10: 5-Day Trek to the Lost City (Ciudad Perdida – Teyuna): An Unforgettable Expedition into the Heart of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

Entering the Lost City (Ciudad Perdida – Teyuna) is far more than simply completing a hike. It is a true expedition into the heart of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, one of the highest coastal mountain ranges in the world and one of the planet's richest biodiversity hotspots. Over the course of five days, we will hike approximately 50 kilometers through dense rainforest trails, crossing mountains, crystal-clear rivers, tropical forests and ancient indigenous paths before reaching one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in the Americas.

The route begins in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and gradually climbs from around 120 meters above sea level to approximately 1,200 meters, where the Lost City lies hidden deep within the jungle. Although the altitude itself is not particularly demanding, the trek requires a good level of fitness due to the constant ascents and descents, high humidity, tropical temperatures ranging between 24°C and 34°C, and the rugged terrain. Throughout the expedition, we will accumulate more than 2,500 meters of elevation gain, crossing the Buritaca River and its tributaries numerous times via suspension bridges or on foot.

The trail winds through lush tropical rainforest, home to an extraordinary diversity of flora and fauna. Towering centuries-old trees, giant ferns, palm trees, orchids, colorful butterflies, monkeys, toucans and countless species of tropical birds accompany us throughout the journey, making each day an unforgettable immersion in nature.

During the expedition, we will also have the opportunity to pass through the ancestral lands of the Kogui, Wiwa, Arhuaco and Kankuamo indigenous communities, direct descendants of the ancient Tayrona civilization. These communities consider the Sierra Nevada to be the "Heart of the World" and continue to preserve a profound spiritual connection with nature and a way of life based on harmony, balance and respect for the environment. Traveling through their territory offers a unique insight into the remarkable cultural and spiritual heritage of this extraordinary region.

The highlight of the trek comes after climbing the historic stone staircase of approximately 1,200 steps, built more than a thousand years ago by the ancient Tayrona people. At the top, surrounded by dense rainforest, appears Ciudad Perdida (Teyuna), an impressive ceremonial city founded around the 8th century—several centuries before Machu Picchu. The archaeological complex consists of dozens of circular terraces, ceremonial plazas, stone pathways, staircases and an advanced hydraulic system that remains remarkably well preserved to this day. It is estimated that during its peak, the city was home to between 2,000 and 8,000 inhabitants, making it one of the most important political, religious and commercial centers of the Tayrona civilization.

Daily hikes range between 4 and 7 hours, alternating challenging climbs with gentler sections, scenic riverside trails and refreshing natural pools where there is time to swim. Nights are spent in comfortable mountain camps carefully integrated into the surrounding rainforest, where the sounds of flowing rivers and the vibrant nocturnal wildlife create an unforgettable atmosphere.

The five-day itinerary offers a more relaxed pace than the classic four-day trek, allowing more time to fully appreciate the spectacular scenery, extraordinary biodiversity and meaningful encounters with the indigenous communities of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

More than just a trekking adventure, this expedition is a journey into the past and a profound connection with one of Colombia's most sacred territories. Pristine nature, remarkable archaeology, adventure and indigenous culture come together to create an experience widely regarded as one of the finest long-distance treks in Latin America.
