Day 6: Sierra Negra Volcano and the volcanic landscapes of Isabela

After breakfast, accompanied by a local guide, we will set out on a fascinating half-day excursion to the impressive Sierra Negra Volcano, the second-highest and one of the most active volcanoes in the entire Galápagos Archipelago.

This extraordinary region offers a unique combination of dramatic volcanic scenery, misty highland forests and surprisingly rich vegetation. The northern slopes of the volcano are frequently covered by clouds and mist, creating an exceptionally fertile microclimate that supports abundant plant life. Thanks to these favourable conditions, some of the first settlers of Isabela Island established their homes in this area, between Puerto Villamil and the inland agricultural community of Santo Tomás.

One of Sierra Negra’s greatest attractions is its enormous caldera, considered one of the largest in the world. During the excursion, we will observe lava flows and volcanic formations from different geological periods, creating a spectacular landscape that often resembles another planet. The area is also home to a rich variety of birdlife and, with a bit of luck, we may spot elegant white herons as well as other species typical of the Galápagos Islands.

After returning to Puerto Villamil, there will be free time to continue exploring the island independently. We recommend a visit to La Galapaguera, the conservation centre where visitors can observe the famous giant Galápagos tortoises in an environment closely resembling their natural habitat.

From there, a marked trail leads to several coastal lagoons frequented by graceful pink flamingos, one of the island’s most memorable sights. Along the way, it is also common to encounter numerous marine iguanas, unique reptiles whose prehistoric appearance perfectly reflects the wild and extraordinary character of the Galápagos Islands.

Day 8: Tintoreras: Penguins, Sharks and Galapagos Wildlife - Santa Cruz

After breakfast, we will embark on an exciting half-day excursion to the fascinating islet of Tintoreras, one of the most spectacular and iconic natural sites on Isabela Island. Accompanied by a local guide, we will cruise along the volcanic coastline and discover some of the most remarkable ecosystems in the entire archipelago.

During the excursion, we will have the opportunity to observe an incredible variety of endemic wildlife in its natural habitat. Among the highlights are the charming Galápagos penguins, the famous blue-footed boobies, graceful sea turtles and the distinctive whitetip reef sharks, often seen resting in crystal-clear channels and crevices formed by ancient lava flows.

Tintoreras is also home to one of the largest concentrations of marine iguanas in the Galápagos. These extraordinary reptiles, found nowhere else on Earth, move across the black volcanic rocks creating scenes that seem to belong to a prehistoric world.

The excursion also includes a memorable snorkelling experience in transparent waters, where we can swim among colourful tropical fish, observe sea turtles and discover the extraordinary underwater world of the Galápagos from close range.

Later, we will enjoy a walk along the islet’s trails, crossing impressive lava formations shaped by ancient volcanic eruptions. The contrast between the black rocks, coastal vegetation and the brilliant turquoise waters creates some of the most photogenic landscapes in the entire archipelago.

At the end of the excursion, we will return to Puerto Villamil. In the afternoon, we will board a speedboat to Santa Cruz Island, continuing our journey through one of the most extraordinary destinations on Earth.
